LESSONS FROM THE VIRGINS

TEXT: Matthew 25:1-13

INTRODUCTION:

  1. This parable is found in a series of parables given to explain how His followers should act while awaiting His return.

        1) Matthew 24:45-51 The Wicked Servant:

        2) Matthew 25:1-13 The Foolish Virgins:

        3) Matthew 25:14-30 The Talents:

B. The first parable uses the wedding customs of the day to teach of the need to always be ready.

I. THE WISE AND FOOLISH VIRGINS:

A. Christ is the Bridegroom and the church is His bride.

      1. Ephesians 5:25

      2. Revelation 21:2

      3. Revelation 21:9

B. On His return to Earth, Jesus will find two categories of people:

     1. Matthew 7:24 - The wise will be properly prepared for His coming.

     2. Matthew 7:26 - The foolish will go to sleep unprepared.

C. Some weary church members will be asleep and won't be aloud to go:

    1. Luke 12:35-36

    2. 1 Thessalonians 5:6

D. The foolish virgins failed in two areas:

    1. They were sleeping when there was important work to be done (Romans 13:11).

    2. They were unprepared (1Peter 5:8).

II. LESSONS FOR US:

    A. We can't be saved by the oil of another: (Philippians 2:12; Romans 12:14).

    B. Claiming to be the Lord's friend will not be enough (Matthew 25:10-13).

    C. When God closes the door, it is closed forever (Luke 13:24-28).

CONCLUSION:

  1. You have another opportunity.
  2. Don’t squander this one.
