THE DAY OF JUDGMENT
TEXTS:
- Revelation 20:11-15
- Acts 17:30-31 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now
commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on
which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has
ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the
dead."
- There will be a day of judgment:
- No truth no more clearly taught in the Bible.
- No fact more firmly established.
- No warning more emphatic.
- THE CERTAINTY OF THE JUDGMENT:
- It is an appointment of God (See Acts 17:31 above).
- Two future events are absolutely certain death and judgment (Hebrews
9:27).
- Many inspired men testified concerning the judgment.
- Solomon Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole
matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. For God will
bring
every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or
evil.
- Jesus Matthew 11:20-24 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which
most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: "Woe to
you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were
done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long
ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for
Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who
are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty
works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained
until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the
land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you."
- Paul 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment
seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body,
according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the
terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I
also trust are well known in your consciences.
- Peter 2Peter 2:9 the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of
temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of
judgment,
- John - 1 John 4:17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we
may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in
this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear,
because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in
love. We love Him because He first loved us.
- A real and certain day is set.
- THE PERSONS WHO ARE TO BE JUDGED:
- He will judge the world (John 3:16).
- Let us consider:
- The universality of it: Matthew 25:31-32 "When the Son of Man comes
in His
glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne
of His glory.
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them
one from
another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats.
- The individuality of it:
- Romans 2:6 who "will render to each one according to his deeds":
- Romans 14:12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
- 1 Corinthians 3:8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and
each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
- THE BASIS OF JUDGMENT:
- Our deeds:
- Good or bad 2Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the
body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
- Absence of deeds Matthew 25:30 talents 5/2/1
- James 2:24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by
faith only.
- Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
- Our words:
- Matthew 12:36 37 But I say to you that for every idle word men may
speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your
words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
- Lying, cursing, gossi9ping, sarcastic remarks, verbal jabs.
- Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but
what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the
hearers.
- Even the secret things will be judged Romans 2:16 in the day when God
will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.
- THE PERSONS WHO WILL BE THE JUDGE:
- By that man whom God has ordained
John 5:22
- 2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus
Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His
kingdom:
- He has given assurance by resurrection (Acts 17:31).
- Empty tomb says Jesus will be the judge
- Vacated burial clothes
- Perplexed Roman guards
- Bribing Jewish leaders
- The established church.
- Jesus will be the judge because He has the standard of Judgment - The
word of God: John 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words,
has that which judges him the word that I have spoken will judge him in
the last day.
- PRONOUNCEMENT OF JUDGMENT WILL BE JUST FAIR AND RIGHTEOUS:
- They will be final and irrevocable
- No appealing to a higher court.
- No termination or shortening of sentence (eternal).
- SOME THINGS WHICH WILL HAPPEN ON THAT DAY:
A. The Lord shall descend from Heaven (Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16)
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of
an
archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise
first.
- The dead shall be raised and the living changed (1 Corinthians 15:52).
- There will be universal wailing Revelation 1:7 Behold, He is coming
with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all
the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
- Before the Great Judge "Shall be gathered all nations" Matthew
25:32.
- You and I will be there.
- Sodom and Gomorrah will be there (Matthew 12:41).
- People from Nineveh will be there (Matthew 12:42).
- Queen of Sheba will be there (Matthew 12:42).
- People from before the flood will be there.
- The books shall be open (Revelation 2012-14).
- The Great Judge shall separate them one from another (Matthew 25:32).
- Chaff from wheat.
- Goats from sheep
- Unrighteous from righteous
- Husbands from wives
- Parents from children
- Friends from friends.
- Great Judge will welcome the righteous to Heaven (Matthew 25:34).
- But shall condemn the wicked to eternal punishment (Matthew 25:41).
CONCLUSION:
- The judgment is spoken of in the Bible more often than Heaven is.
- There is more detail given about the judgment than there is about
Heaven.
- Make ready by obeying the gospel.
- Jesus is the Great Judge, He will save you.
- Live faithfully and you will be given abundance entrance into eternal
life.
