HOW GREAT THOU ART!
TEXT: Psalm 111
INTRODUCTION:
1. Exodus 3:14 when God referred to Himself as simply “I am” He used the word
YHWH.
2. To the Jews of Moses’ day this name was so Holy that they would not speak it
aloud, lest they use it in an irreverent fashion (Exodus 20:7)!
3. In reading it aloud they would often replace it with the word “Adonai” which
means “the Lord.”
4. This name was Holy, that scribes are said to have bathed and put on clean
clothes before they would write it!
5. What a stark contrast to the flippant way it is used today! (OMG etc).
6. Psalms 33:8 “Let all the earth fear the Lord, Let all the inhabitants of the world
stand in awe of Him.”

II. OUR RESPONSE TO THE GREAT NAME OF GOD:
A. I will praise Him (1)
1) Revelation 7:9-12

B. I will fear Him (10)
1) Isaiah 6:1ff
2) Psalms 51
C. I will obey Him (10)
1) Rough road
2) Instead of fixing the road they just put up a sign “Rough Road Ahead”
CONCLUSION:
1. When someone uses the Name of God in vain, they saying that it means nothing
to them.
2. But: At the Name of God angels bow, demons tremble!
3. God has highly exalted Jesus and place His name above every name.
a) Every knee should bow.
b) Every tongue should confess.
4. Peter said to repent and be baptized in the name of the Lord!
5. Saul was told to arise and be baptized, calling on the name of the Lord!
